The tragic killing of a primary school teacher in Garissa County has drawn condemnation from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), which has vowed to support the victim’s family.
Stephen Vundi Musili, who taught at Hulugho Primary School, was fatally shot on Monday morning in an attack that also claimed the life of local chief Abdifatah Mohamud in Hulugho sub-county.
In an official statement o Monday, TSC called the incident a serious blow to education, highlighting the risks teachers face while carrying out their duties in insecure areas.
“The Commission strongly condemns this heinous and cowardly act of terror, which has not only robbed a young teacher of his life but also undermines the right to education, peace, and security for teachers and learners alike,” said Acting Commission Secretary Evaleen Mitei.
The commission confirmed that Musili’s remains have been taken to Nairobi and that arrangements are underway to support his family and ensure a respectful funeral.
“Working closely with the security agencies, the Government has flown the body of our late teacher to Nairobi for preservation at Chiromo Funeral Home pending further arrangements,” TSC noted.
“The Commission is working closely with the family of the teacher to ensure they are accorded the necessary support to ensure a dignified sendoff.”
TSC added that a team made up of multiple government agencies will visit Hulugho on Tuesday to evaluate the security situation and guide decisions on staff deployment and operations in the area.
